If you've stood in a North East ground over the last couple of decades, you'll know the line. Newcastle supporters have long used the phrase as a chant aimed at Sunderland fans — the gist being that Sunderland were a club who didn't get out much, while their neighbours had their European nights to talk about.

It was a decent wind-up, in fairness. Milan is a specific choice: a proper European football city, the sort of away trip that turns into a story you tell for twenty years. Naming it was the point. It wasn't about geography, it was about the idea that Sunderland would never be the ones going.

Then Sunderland went and qualified for Europe. And of all the cities the draw could have handed over, it handed over that one. Suddenly the question has an answer, and it's going to be answered by several thousand people in the away end.

Nobody on Wearside is pretending this is revenge for anything. It's better than that — it's funnier. A joke that was told at Sunderland's expense for years has quietly become a travel itinerary, and the punchline now belongs to the people it was aimed at.
